*What it is and how to read it*

The Moment Before is a series of close readings of animated films. The goal is to show you, the reader, how to read a scene through movement — a turn of the head, a blink, a pause.

Movement can show more of what a character is feeling than the words do. A character can say one thing while the turn of their head says something else. Our goal is to understand that difference.

The articles are not here to tell you what every movement means. They are here to help you notice them — to slow the scene down, look at what changes, and ask why it changes there.

Over time, the hope is that you start to see those movements for yourself and come to your own reading of the scene.

This is what I saw. What did you see?
