About The Moment Before
Close readings of film through movement, gesture, and the moments before words — and the story behind The Moment Before.
What is The Moment Before?
Close readings of film through movement, gesture, and the moments before words.
Most film discussion focuses on what characters say and what happens next. This publication focuses on what the body does — how a hand moves, where the eyes go, what a character’s posture tells you before the line arrives. The dialogue often confirms what the scene has already shown.
The Moment Before is a place to read those moments carefully.
Why I made it
I kept noticing things.
Not themes. Not plot. Specific physical details — a hand that doesn’t quite land, an eye that stays one beat longer than it needs to, a body that has already decided before the mouth has caught up.
The real breakthrough came while watching a film with my six-year-old daughter and asking her what she thought was going on. She saw it immediately — not the story, the movement.
That question, and her answer, is where this publication began.
A note on how I watch
I’m neurodivergent. The way I process things — pattern, repetition, physical behaviour, what doesn’t quite fit — turns out to be useful for reading scenes.
I notice things in sequence. I track what the body does across beats. I follow what’s inconsistent before I name why.
That’s not the whole explanation for what this publication does. But it’s part of how I got here
