What Are the Paths?

A short introduction to the Paths — how The Moment Before groups scenes by emotional movement rather than by film, character, or genre.

Scenes follow emotional paths. At The Moment Before, we group those scenes into Paths — a way of browsing by what a scene is actually doing rather than by film or character.

Two examples:

The Looking — a moment where one character truly sees another. Something There from Beauty and the Beast is a clean example.

The Longing — desire for a life or world not yet reached. A Whole New World gives us a character wanting beyond the limits of the present.

A scene does not always belong to only one Path. It may carry several at once. Poor Unfortunate Souls, for example, can hold Longing, Bargain, and Cost in the same scene.

When that happens, The Moment Before chooses the Path that is strongest in that particular reading — the emotional movement carrying the most weight.

Paths are designed to let you choose the emotional journey you want to follow.

This is what I saw. What did you see?
